chemical oxygen demand (COD or CODcr) refers to the amount of oxidant consumed when reducing substances in water are oxidized and decomposed under the action of an external strong oxidant under certain strict conditions, expressed in mg/L of oxygen. Chemical oxygen demand reflects the degree of water pollution by reducing substances, these substances include organic matter, nitrite, ferrous salt, sulfide and so on.

The mass concentration of oxygen corresponding to the chlorine generated by the oxidized chloride ions in the water sample is the chloride ion correction value. The difference between the apparent CODcr and the chloride correction value is the CODcr of the measured water sample.
